Town History

The Town of Hartford was originally founded as the town of Wright on January 31st 1846, and was renamed the town of Hartford in Feb. 1847. The town has a total area of 30.9 mi (80.1 km). 30.2 mi (78.2 km) of it is land and 0.7 mi (1.9 km) of it (2.36%) is water.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,609 people, 1,450 households, and 1,152 families residing in the town. The population density was 133.6 people per square mile (51.6/km). There were 1,450 housing units at an average density of 47.6/mi (18.4/km). The racial makeup of the town was 98.8% White, 0.30% Black, 0.30% American Indian, 0.70% Asian, 0.20% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population. The top three categories for ancestry within the town are German, Polish, and Irish respectively.

There were 1,450 households out of which 40.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.7% were married couples living together, 4.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% were non-families. 14.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $69,896, and the median income for a family was $73,576. Males had a median income of $42,301 versus $29,727 for females. The per capita income for the town was $26,928. About 1.1% of families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 0.7% of those ages 65 and older.
